Italianette Pizza
Cincinnati · New York · Jan 2024

Being perhaps a better pizza/architecture nerd than speller, I was very excited to visit *Italianate Pizza*. A pizzeria dedicated to Cincinnati’s outstanding stock of 19th century Italianate architecture might even give me a shot at my dream colab: @cincinnati_revealed. Can you just imagine? “You see, great pizza and great architecture are really a lot alike: both are works of art that tastefully balance structure with aesthetics”. Alas, my dreams were smashed by spelling nerds - my perpetual nemeses. …but perhaps Krimmer’s *Italianette* offered a extra cheesy lining to my storm clouds?
Italianette Pizza opened in 1957 in Silverton. As far as I can tell, they coined the word ‘Italianette’ (‘Little Italian’ - probably as it was a small carry-out joint). In 1985, the Krimmer family purchased the restaurant and added their name. Currently they have two locations: Silverton and North College Hill.
Italianette does a thin-ish crust Midwestern style pizza. Its slightly crispy on the bottom (no screen) and a bit doughy - the inside had a bit of a uniform bread-like consistency. The slices were cheesy (allowing an epic #cheesepull), soft, and foldable. Some in our party thought it tasted like a better version of LaRosas, sans the sweet sauce. Italianette seems popular with families & I think this is exactly what you want for a family dinner: cheesy, flavorful, and enjoyable. Not artisan pizza, but it can hit the spot.
Postscript: I’m also trying to get Robert Caro to appear on ‘Joey Pepperoni’.
