Sonny’s Pizza

A Detroit style throwback pizzeria in DC near @howard1867. @sonnyspizzadc offers an interesting take on Detroit style, veering in a Sicilian-American direction. The crust here is on the thinner side for Detroit. It was flavorful and flexible / less well-done rather than crisp. There was a generous helping of somewhat sweet sauce, leading to a bit of sogginess on the sauce/crust borderline. The lack of char on the crust contrasted with the highly charred (but not burnt) spicy pepperoni cups. I’m not sure on the cheese mix here, but it didn’t taste like the typical buttery “brick cheese” that’s usually on a Detroit style. The most prominent cheese was a quite generous topping of quality Parmesan. This led to a fairly salty pepperoni slice, that would pair ever so nicely with a cold beverage …which they just happen to offer with their thoughtfully constructed beer menu.
