Joe’s Pizzeria
Dayton · Dayton · Tavern · Oct 2024

When I mention “Dayton Style,” the cliché response is always, “It’s an attitude as much as a wardrobe.” And indeed, effortlessly chic is the ultimate Dayton uniform. Elegance is seemingly in their DNA, with a style that never tries too hard. Yes, Daytonians can make even the simplest scarf look like haute couture.
But rather than wax poetic about the trending looks you’ll see on Monument Avenue this fall, I want to focus on Dayton Style Pizza—a variant of the larger Midwest tavern style. Dayton Style pizza is thin, square-cut, and topped from edge to edge. Cassano’s (@cassanospizzaking) and Marion’s (@marionspiazza) are the two most known exemplars—with their small, salty slices. However, Joe’s is my personal favorite. It’s a straightforward, quality pizza.
Joe’s Pizzeria’s crust is thin but not rolled super-thin. It’s sturdy, crisp, and flavorful. The sauce is slightly sweet, balanced, and not overwhelming. Pepperoni is the real statement accessory here—cups that curl up and char around the edges. They’re edge to edge, as is the Dayton style. Combined with the generous cheese, it’s a flavor profile that feels both nostalgic and satisfying.
Overall, this pizza is like the little black dress of the pizza world. If you’re in the mood for something traditional, straightforward, and well-executed, Joe’s Pizzeria is worth a visit. Fashion fades, but Dayton Style pizza is forever.
